Never Mind Jindal

I have been checking election results all evening, and I really don't want to go there. So, something completely different, but also (bonus!) political. Via Daily Kos, some ideas for a new Constitutional Convention.

My personal favorite being:

Amendment 30: From now on, "pro-life" has to mean what any reasonable person thinks it means, or you don't get to call yourself that, upon penalty of being beaten senseless with seafood. If you spend your time blustering about how we're going to kick some Iraqi ass, or which cities or religious hubs need to be bombed into a "sheet of glass", or explaining how children don't really need healthcare, if their parents had the blinding audacity to get jobs someplace that refuses to offer it, you forfeit the term.

Similar punishments will be meted out for abuse of the terms "compassionate", "patriotic", and "news".

Haha.

But then, I live in a state that just elected a governor who supports the teaching of intelligent design in schools. So who am I to make fun of Republicans?

Go Awaaaaayyy

This is a list of exactly what fell through the slot for today's mail:

17 pieces of ElectionCrap.
1 menu from Italian Pie.

SEVENTEEN, people. In today's mail alone. I am still stuck on that, and it has been half an hour since I slipped on it walking through the front door. I hate this primary, and I hate the constant local ads, and I hate all the candidates for governor, none of whom are remotely liberal enough for me to vote for in good conscience. And I hate that I'm going to have to vote for one of them anyway, for the sole purpose of taking one vote away from Bobby Jindal and hoping he gets forced into a runoff.

This city's local politicking hits a level of ridiculousness not to be found anywhere else in the U.S. Seriously.

Good Article Today

The New York Times re: the black women's vote.

“They stand at the intersection of race, class and gender,” he said. “Black men say to them, ‘Sister, are you with us?’ and at the same time white women say, ‘Sister, are you with us?’”

I especially liked this bit:
Betty McClain, 51, a bus driver who was waiting to have her hair done at Miss Clara’s, said after Ms. Baia left that she liked what she heard about Mr. Obama. But she likes Mrs. Clinton, too. “She’s already been president before,” Ms. McClain said approvingly, dismissing Bill Clinton’s role in his own administration. “He was just there,” Ms. McClain said of Mr. Clinton. “He was just the husband, that’s all. She really ran the country.”

Heh.

Tomorrow, Space!

While recovering from dinner at Nacho Mama's (to celebrate the taking back of Congress, of course-- we ordered BLUE margaritas), watching the opening credits of one of many, many discs of Star Trek: Enterprise Season One on DVD...

Me: Sweetie? Do you think the Democrats will take us into space?

Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History

Holy Shit

Half an hour ago, it looked like there were 3 states left, all of which were going to the Republicans. I had conceded that the Democrats were going to gain significant seats but not take the Senate. Which was OK. I was more than happy enough about the House. Since a little before midnight CST, Virginia and Missouri have flip-flopped. This is crazy.

They still might do it. Unbelievable.

Democrats Win the House!!!

Eeeeee! CNN just projected that the Democrats will take back the House. Have been waiting all night for this. Will stay up till it's official. And the first female Speaker of the House, which is a huge, huge, huge thing in my book. I love it. I loooooove it. I am so excited right now.

Voting Day... Again

I hate living in Louisiana because they make you vote all the freaking time. Now, I came close to majoring in government and am quite outspoken about my political opinions, so don't get me wrong. I am interested in politics. I'm all for voting. But. Since coming back from Katrina in January, this is the fourth time I have gone to my local place of polling! And of course there will be a runoff, so in another month, I'll go again! Oy. But meanwhile, another day, another election.

People keep going on about the low voter turnout, but there was a fair little crowd at my polling place (13th Ward, 10th Precinct, Newman school). I voted for consolidating the assessors. I got to vote in the 2nd District Congressional race. Mike was of the opinion that we should vote for Jefferson because otherwise the vote would be split and the Republican candidate might sneak in. And "innocent till proven guilty." Personally, my feelings on this are the same as they were about the spring election. There is no way I am voting for a dude who had money in his freezer, just like there was no way I was voting for Nagin (who I handed a Coke at lunch today, coincidentally), because I don't want people in other parts of the country looking at us and going, "They keep re-electing these same idiots. They deserve what they get. We're not sending them any money." I voted for Troy Carter. There's going to be a runoff anyway.

And now to write more novel and check up on the results of other states' more interesting elections.

Senate Hearings On Katrina

Doing some outlining/structural work on my book, while watching the Katrina hearings on C-SPAN for entertainment. Oh, we have blamings, and finger pointings, and convenient "I forgot who I talked to"s. Of course, now it's come out that the White House knew about the levee breach on the first day. "Brownie" was pretty quick to turn on Homeland Security now that he's no longer on their payroll, accusing them of shunting disaster planning to the side to focus on terrorism. Federal officials are stuttering. "Well, we weren't sure of our information," whines one. "We had reports of a broken levee, but on TV I saw people partying in the French Quarter!" Susan Collins (R-Maine) is displaying some appropriately non-partisan snark as head of the committee. (Rightly so, she's a St. Lawrence alumna.) Now they're disagreeing over their chain of command.

You know what I think? I think it's a two hour flight to Baton Rouge, and a one hour drive to New Orleans from there. Shouldn't someone higher up have GOTTEN ON A *@%#ing plane and gone to see for themselves?

State of the Union: Pretty Shoddy

How big was Hurricane Katrina where you lived? I mean, am I biased in thinking it was one of the major national events of 2005? OK, just because I was kept out of my residence for six weeks because of mandatory evacuation, lost my car, job, health insurance, and stuff, wallowed in limbo and tears for weeks, and was forced to spend all my savings doesn't mean it was that huge for people who didn't live in New Orleans. I accept that. But come on, I am pretty sure lots of people donated money, and Katrina certainly is being covered by the media in pretty much every other American city even five months later.

Why, then, did we get skipped? I mean, and pardon my language, I think a huge WTF is due. For those keeping historical track at home, I am pretty sure the destruction of a major American city has not occurred since 1906. I admit to not having watched Bushie give his shoddy address on the state of his shoddy union, but I read the transcript. And personally, I was baffled. Perhaps shocked would be a better word. The Gulf Coast got 156 words out of 5,300.

But you know why Bush ignored us? I'll tell you what I think. I think we got shafted for two reasons. The first is that the Bush administration knows they dropped the ball on the FEMA/Katrina debacle. "Hey, Brownie ol' buddy, yer doin' a great job!" Feeling embarrassed yet, Bush? Right. So they'd rather pretend the destruction of an American city in a natural disaster didn't happen, because it makes them look bad.

The second reason is that Bush loves simplified, them vs. us, "morally" appealing figures of speech. (Doesn't matter if it's factually inaccurate, it appeals to our good old compassionate hearts, right?) This is the shit he thrives on. Man, is he stumped on Katrina. Because he got away with the War in Iraq garbage for far longer than he should have, by throwing out keywords like "evil" and "barbaric," and junk about "protecting" the country from "terror." But Katrina isn't politically expedient for him for precisely that reason: it was a natural disaster that probably caused "terror" in a lot more American lives than any possible terrorist attack, yet you can't blame Katrina on evil. You can't nail it down into a little constructed package and tell us who to blame.

All apologies to those affected by 9/11, which technically did have a higher death toll. But did it cause the largest American diaspora since the Civil War, the future social effects of which won't be measured for years? It did not. The thing I don't get is that NYC was something like 90% blue during the 2004 election. What I want to know is how on earth Bush managed to garner votes by convincing people in Bumfuck, Kansas that they needed to be protected from "terror" and "evil." Like anyone is ever going to bomb you idiots. Like anyone even visits your town. NYC actually got hit! And even they didn't fall for Bush's rhetoric! And somehow he turns this rhetoric, this 9/11 induced fear, into another term. To get back on point, though, Bush simply can't use what happened to New Orleans to further his own goals. So he leaves it out.

So yeah, where I live is apparently not part of the Union, but Iraq is. Hadn't you heard it's our new colony? Or at least important enough to waste nearly an entire address entitled the "State of the UNION" on. We really care about bringing "freedom" from "evil" to the Middle East. $400 billion to the "war." Less than a quarter of that to the Gulf Coast.

Oh boy. I'm going to wear my MAKE LEVEES NOT WAR shirt every day this week. But I might have to buy two or three more of them, so I can alternate them and not get smelly. Because, oh, did I mention I HAVE NOT HAD A SHOWER IN A MONTH? Because I still have no hot water.

This is America, Mr. Bush. Right here. Excuse me while I go stick my head under a freezing cold faucet.
